Applying for a visa to the United States

Posted by Avisa:   10.04.2020

The United States is a country of contrasts.  The territory of this country span 6 time zones and the climate in the states can be very different: from tropical Hawaii to frosty Alaska. The desire to travel around the U.S. attracts a lot of tourists and Ukrainians are no exception. Before planning a trip, it is necessary to clarify the visa formalities of this country. All Ukrainians must get a visa.

The first step is to decide on the purpose of the visit to the United States. The most common goals are tourism, visiting relatives or friends, and business trips. In such cases, you need to apply for a visa type B1/B2 US visa, which is determined by the officer when passing the border, but usually the maximum term - 6 months. A visa to the U.S. for Ukrainians is issued for 10 years.

The second step is to pay the consular fee. You can schedule an interview any time during the year, which is convenient if your plans have been changed suddenly. Unfortunately, the consular fee is not refundable.

The third is to make an appointment at the embassy. This is a requirement.  Dates for this appointment may be available withing two weeks or sooner. This should be considered when you plan your trip date. Also, availability for your dates will depend on:

  • whether you have been refused a visa in the last 12 months;
  • You are a citizen of the country in which you will apply for a visa or not.

 Fourth - you need to fill out a visa application DS-160 online. In this form, you will answer many questions truthfully, otherwise, if the embassy can refuse your visa application.

Once the organizational part is completed, you need to think about documents which are advisable to take with you for an interview. In most cases, the visa officer does not look at them, but it is still better to have them with you:

  • Be sure to bring an invitation from a company if you are going to visit or, if the purpose of your visit is business;
  • Your financial condition will be of interest to the visa officer, so it is advisable to take all sources of income with you in documentary form;
  • binding to the country - sometimes plays a decisive role in the approval of a visa, so bring with you all the birth certificates of children, marriage, documents confirming the presence of real estate, and savings.

-depending on the person's situation, additional documents may be needed.

The fifth is to prepare for the interview. It is not always possible for a person to successfully pass this stage on his or her own. Because of inexperience and lack of knowledge of the process and type of questions asked by the visa officer, people sometimes make very ridiculous mistakes. Therefore, we recommend that everyone use the consultation service before the interview, even if you are 100% sure of your answers. Sometimes over-confidence prevents you from seeing the nuances that can lead to visa denial. In general, the reasons for the denial of a U.S. visa can be very different and so we believe that preparation for the interview plays a very important role.

Getting a visa to the U.S. is not always an easy process, it needs to be taken seriously. Regardless of the decision, the visa officer will let you know if you get your visa or not, right away at the end of the interview.
