When and how to apply for the Green Card lottery in 2020?

For the Green Card lottery in 2020, you can apply from October 3, 2019 to November 6, 2019.

The actual lottery will take place in May and June of 2020.  To participate in the lottery, you must meet the following requirements:

• Have completed secondary education or have two years of work experience over the past five years;
• Be a native of the country which is participating in the lottery;
• Not have a criminal record;
• Not have communicable disease.

Applications are submitted online once a year during the period specified above.  Participants who fill out multiple applications will be excluded from the lottery and those participants information will be stored in the information systems of the Department of State.

Applicants must provide the following information:

• Passport data;
• Contact details, address of residence;
• Information on education, training and work experience;
• Information about the spouse and children under the age of 21, if any. Electronic photographs of all family members must be submitted, regardless of whether any or all plan to immigrate to the United States.  If your application is chosen in the lottery and this information is not submitted, the winning application will be forfeited;
• A recent 5 x 5 cm electronic photograph with white background. A previous passport or visa photograph is not acceptable.

When the application is accepted, a unique number is assigned to each applicant.  Application status can be checked during the months of May and June 2020.  An applicant whose application is chosen has one year (October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2020) to produce all necessary documents, undergo a medical examination, and be interviewed prior to going to the US.
